HUMANITY DICK
(Working Title)
SUMMARY
A tightly cast stage musical of the life and times of Richard ‘Humanity Dick’ Martin, the greatest ever Irishman. All animal rights law in the world stem back to this remarkable man, who was also the driving force behind the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Oh –and he was also the most renowned duellist in 18thcentury Ireland.
Based on the biography of Richard Martin by Peter Phillips, with original music from Micky Martin, this new stage musical is an expansion of the highly successful Musical Narration performed by Phillips and Martin at the Roundstone Arts Festival, with an additional performance at Ballynahinch Castle and a reprise for Jeremy Browne, 11th Marquess of Sligo at Westport House.
This production will have a cast of four actor musicians. The production will tour small to medium theatre venues in Ireland during the Spring and Autumn of 2021, along with a summer residency in Killarney. Thereafter, in2022, the production will be adapted and developed into a full-scale stage musical using a larger cast. The project is now ready to attach a Creative Director with a view to further development, casting and a period of development rehearsal in June (subject to Irish lockdown regulations being relaxed).

THE PRODUCTION
Based on the successful 2010 musical narration, this production is a fully integrated stage musical using 4 actor/ musicians. The premise is that the audience is taken from modern day Galway back to 1776, guided by The Busker. In a similar manner to the character of Che Guevarain Evita, The Busker uses his songs, occasionally assumes the guise of characters and sometimes breaks the fourth wall to lead the audience through the life of a man whose story transcends fiction. We are transported from the duelling fields of Connaught to Gratton’s Parliament and onto the high society of Georgian London, where we are to witness the birth of animal rights.
